One of the most common questions we get has to be,
"How do I keep my day 1 curls on day 2?"
It seems as if no matter your curl pattern, hair texture, or hair length...
The curl refresh struggle is REAL!
We experience everything:
- loss of definition,
- curls that go flat,
- frizz
- dryness
And this always seems to occur overnight.
So how do we prevent this and keep our bouncy fresh curls well into the week?
The answers are simple, read on to find out...
Protect your curls with a satin bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase
Protecting your curls is a must!
Anytime you are laying your hair on a surface for an extended period of time, you need to protect it.
Specifically, you should use a material like silk or satin because they absorb less moisture and reduce friction.
This prevents tangles and frizz and helps you keep moisture in your hair.
Avoid the following fabrics, they are excellent to sleep in for warmth but they are the arch-nemesis to your curls:
- cotton
- wool
- jersey
One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to your nighttime routine.
Which curl protector you use depends on what works best for you.
For instance, short tight curls might best be preserved with a pillowcase but long hair might need a bonnet or scarf possibly combined with the pillowcase.
I highly suggest you use a satin pillowcase.
It’s so easy, you don't have to remember to put on a bonnet or scarf, you just lay down!
Regardless of what you use morning hair is another issue.
How to Deal with Flat Curls in the Morning
If you wake up and find that your hair has flattened do the following:
Using dry fingertips and a little bit of steam in the air from your shower, lift your hair separating the curls fluffing them up and out.
For longer curls, pineappling the hair upwards at night is the most effective technique to avoid flat curls in the first place.
This helps maintain volume while protecting your curls from losing definition.
- Set your hair using a blow dryer or diffuser
It is very key to "set" your hair if you want the style to last. - Kim Lewis, CurlMix Co-Founder & CEO
You can opt for air-drying your curls if you want.
But, beware, air drying allows the hair to lose more moisture, and tightly coil, decreasing the amount of definition.
A.K.A Shrinkage!
Don’t be too afraid though, heathy hair shrinks, it’s normal.
If heat damage is also something you fear, don’t worry, use indirect heat.
Tools like a blow dryer, hooded dryer, or a diffuser in constant motion apply heat with less damage.
Refresh with a Spray Bottle
I have to be honest, I enjoy refreshing my curls with a fine mister spray bottle.
It gives me enough water coverage to refresh curls instead of dipping my head in the sink.
I typically use this tool around day 3 or 4.
I use a light spritz of water over the top over my hair, then I add a tiny bit of moisturizer to my fingertips to define curls.
And that’s it!
Your hair doesn't need much once it's styled.
Rule of thumb: If you are styling your hair appropriately, you should only need to add product once or twice a week.

Must I wash and condition in the shower? I am not able to stand for long period of time. I prefer to wash and condition in the sink. Why can’t I do it that way?
I have a lot oh shrinkage and look dry the next morning. I do sleep in silk bonet and I can still feel product in my hair. What should I do.
The next time my hair is hard as a helmet. I sleep on a silk pillowcase or alternate with a silk lined up on it. When I try to re-define my curls with my dry fingers it just does not work. I tried adding a little bit of step three heart rate but it only Became frizzy. I used a Spritz bottle to add a little water on top of my hair and my fingers to re-define my curls but I just ended up with an Afro. Super excited about the day one look but can’t figure out how to maintain it.
At the end of last year, I did a big chop and have spent 2020 becoming more connected with my hair. I’m biracial and it had always been hard to find products that helped my textured locks, but finally decided to try CurlMix and I LOVE IT! I’m so excited to have finally found something that not only feels great, but makes my curls pop like never before. I’ve gotten so many comments since using the watermelon wash and go and have seen inches grow in just a few months. I can’t wait to have long big hair again and it’s all thanks to CurlMix!
Hi! I’m new to curl mix and have a few questions:
1. How do I work in the deep conditioner set that I just purchased with the 4-step kit?
2. Should I use a spray bottle and step 3 to refresh? I have shoulder length hair and by day 2 I need a boost. I sleep with a bonnet and use the shower steam to let my hair fall, but is there any easier way to loosen after i take off my bonnet?
Thanks for making such an awesome product 😁
