My Scalp Has Been Crying for Help… and Honestly, It’s My Fault
Okay, CurlMixers, I have a confession to make…
My scalp has been on fire lately. 🔥 Like, itching, flaking, screaming at me kind of fire. And before you ask, yes, I know better.
But I’ve been working out 3 to 5 times a week (which I love 💪🏾), hitting the sauna or jacuzzi afterward, and then ... wait for it...doing blowouts every week.
GASP. I know. Kim, you should know better, right?
And I do know better! But life has been life-ing.
After those workouts, I’m sweating from my roots, but I’ve been stretching my wash days longer than I should because… kids.
If I have to choose between detangling my hair or doing my babies’ hair, you already know who wins. So now I’m going 10 days between washes. 😩
That’s a recipe for disaster: sweat, heat, dry air, and blow dryer abuse?
My scalp wants to murder me. Like for real. LOL.
If your scalp is crying too, trust me, start with a solid cleanse like our Mint Liquid Clarifying Shampoo or Strawberry Hibiscus Liquid Poo to reset.
So yes, I’ve been committing some cardinal hair sins, but I’ve finally gotten serious about repairing the damage and I wanted to share exactly how I’m bouncing back.
Here's What I’m Doing to Fix It:
1. I stop rushing.
When I finally carve out the time to wash my hair, I give myself more than an hour or two. I clear the schedule. I turn on a playlist, grab a towel for my shoulders, and take my time.
2. I shampoo TWICE (sometimes three times!).
That first cleanse has to be minty and clarifying. I go straight for our Mint Liquid Clarifying Shampoo to break through all the sweat, buildup, and scalp funk. Lately, it’s been my go-to. The peppermint and witch hazel combo is like a spa day for your scalp. That tingly cleanse reminds me I’m still alive.
If I feel like my scalp is extra crusty (it happens, let’s not lie), I’ll go in for a third cleanse. But after the first deep clean, I follow up with something more moisturizing, like our Luscious Lotus Anti-Frizz Shampoo or the one from the Strawberry Mint Ultimate Wash Day Bundle. That gives me the perfect balance of clean and softness.
3. I layer in the Scalp Treatment for extra comfort.
Right after the liquid poo, I go in with our Revitalizing Scalp Treatment. I love that it still gives me that tingling sensation, but it’s a bit heavier than the shampoo without being as conditioning as a full wash-day product. It’s that perfect in-between step when you want a clean, soothed scalp that still feels refreshed but not stripped.
4. I massage my scalp like I mean it.
I use my fingertips (or a scalp brush if I’m feeling fancy) and give myself a good 3–5 minute massage. It helps loosen flakes, stimulates blood flow, and feels heavenly after a long week.
5. I give the blow dryer a break… most of the time.
I usually style my hair in two crown braids so I can work out the next day and not worry about frizz or re-styling. I only do another blowout for special occasions or a night with friends because I LOVE my BIG HAIR. But you can totally do a wash-and-go if that’s more your style.
These days, while I’m prioritizing my physical health over everything else, my hair is getting pinned up and put awayand that’s okay. It’s all about balance. And scalp peace.
Here's how you know I've been working hard. Here's my before where I was almost 250lbs.
Here's me today at 215lbs.
So yes, even as the CEO of CurlMix, I fall off sometimes. But the good news is: your scalp will forgive you if you treat it right. 💆🏽♀️
If you’ve been feeling the same way... itchy, flaky, irritated... know that you’re not alone, and there’s a way back to healthy, balanced roots.
Start with a proper cleanse. Make time for your hair. And show your scalp some love before it starts plotting against you like mine did. 😂
