We want our Curlfriends to achieve the growth of their dreams; more importantly, we want to support them while doing so. We've put together a list of simple tips that you can be using right now to help achieve your #curlgoals!
If you’re a CurlMixer with high-porosity hair, this one's for you!
What is High Porosity Hair?
Hair porosity is defined by your hair’s natural ability to absorb and retain moisture. This has an impact on how your hair holds moisture and products when passing through the hair's outermost layer (also known as the cuticle). The cuticle is made up of tiny, overlapping cells, which resemble a terra cotta roof.
If you have high-porosity hair, these overlapping cells will be much further apart, as opposed to low or normal-porosity hair. This allows for your hair to easily absorb products and water, which makes it harder to keep that moisture in your hair for long.
If your hair has the following characteristics, it’s likely it’s high-porosity:
- Prone to frizz
- Feels dry quickly
- Breaks and tangles easily
- Absorbs water just as quickly as it releases water
- Dull-looking hair
(Pro tip: the best way to determine your porosity is by taking the Porosity Test!)
Even as challenging as high-porosity hair can be, there are still ways to get your growth on. Check out our tips:
Detangle Often
High-porosity hair is extremely prone to tangles, which often lead to breakage. It’s important that you detangle your hair regularly to prevent any harm. Using a detangling tool like our Flex Brush is excellent to ensure that you’re removing all shed hairs and tangles.
While detangling, be sure to take your time! We recommend that you part your hair into sections to make the work more manageable. To prevent tension on your hair strands, use a conditioner on wet hair while you’re detangling.
Deep Condition Weekly
High-porosity hair is prone to dryness, so retaining hydration is crucial for growth! We recommend that you nourish your strands with a hydrating deep conditioner on a weekly basis.
Use Moisturizing Products
The next key to growing high-porosity hair is making sure that you lock in your moisture properly. We recommend using water-based leave-in conditioners or moisturizers, and Hair Serums to help seal in that moisture. Serums have the ability to provide a strong seal (without weighing your hair down), while leave-in conditioners and moisturizers are lightweight sealants that offer a less amount of build-up.
Protect Your Hair
The way you deserve a good night’s sleep after a long day is the same rest your hair needs! Even more important, your hair deserves to be protected during that rest.
Try opting for a satin pillowcase or satin bonnet to sleep on so that you retain as much moisture as possible during your slumber. Satin material protects your hair by preventing tangles and frizz.
(Pro tip: If your curls are short, consider using the pillowcase first. If they’re longer, use the bonnet + pillowcase combo!)
Maintaining healthy hair care practices is essential for growing your high-porosity hair. Hair naturally grows on its own, month after month; however, the way you take care of that new growth will make all the difference! The fruit of your labor will be nourishing (and leave your curls flourishing!).
Remember to keep hydrating, detangling, moisturizing, and protecting your beautiful hair. You’re right on track to see the growth you’re looking for.

I have thin hair in the top and very dense. I purchased a Binet, but sometimes I forget to use it. I am trying to use to the 4 step system and getting a good curl pattern. I would like to get the flex brush too. Thanks! Denise
