You know what’s a huge shame?
It’s 2021 and we’re still facing this prevalent issue: hair discrimination.
There has been tremendous progress in the world of natural hair, specifically relating to how it plays a role in our various identities.
Curls, coils, and kinks all deserve to exist in spaces (such as school or work) without the threat of discrimination that could drastically affect our livelihood.
Fortunately, help is definitely on the way!
With Juneteenth approaching, we wanted to take the time to acknowledge and honor a major milestone in Black hair history: The CROWN Act!
What is the CROWN Act?
The CROWN (Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) Act was created by the CROWN Coalition, partnered with Dove.
This law seeks to “ensure protection against discrimination based on race-based hairstyles”, which notably includes curly and afro hair textures.
Since being established in June of 2019, the CROWN Act has been passed in 10 states and 24 U.S. cities.
While we wait to see which states will pass this curl-supporting law next, here are a few ways that you can support the CROWN Act now:
Bring Awareness to Your State
Do you want the CROWN Act to be passed in your respective state? Email your local and state legislators to get this law on their desks!
It may take a while for the law to get passed, but at least this way, your state’s government is more aware of hair discrimination and its related issues.
Stay in the Loop
The CROWN Act has made a lot of progress since its initial founding in June 2019, and their journey is definitely worth following. Keep up with their growth by:
- Following them on their Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook
- Attending any online webinars and forums they host
- Reading any clippings and/or news about them published online
Wear Your Curls Out in ALL Spaces

Got a big day ahead in the office? Rock your curls. Presenting a huge project for school? Bring out the curls. Getting ready for an elegant affair? Doll up your curls!
Whatever the occasion is, we can promise you that your curls are always fit for the style. By wearing your hair out on a daily basis, you’re proving to be an inspiration for curls everywhere.
CurlMix Calendar Alert: July 3rd has been recognized as National Crown Day, established by the CROWN Coalition. If you don’t have your curls out on any other day...make sure they’re popping this day!
The CROWN Act is working to ensure that you and your curls feel seen and valued in any space. We’re proud to support their mission!
